The Fishmonger
This art piece shows an Andreotti who, once back from the front, restores his spirit in Florence continuing his artistic “discourse” left interrupted during the war years. Far from plastic art, drawing has been the means to study, find out and analyze: an abundant production of real- life portraits testify this artistic choice. But now, once home, he reviews the ancient, true values of sculptures of the past and the Tuscan mannerists. His friendship with Ojetti draws him again close to Bourdelle (who is in Florence, as a guest of Ojetti) but with an attention to the expressive values of the eastern world too, India and China, which are strongly reflected in the faces and the attitudes of some art pieces. The figure, with its spiral forms, with the tangle and the alternation of varied folds, recalls, Hellenistic forms; the gestural expressiveness and the importance given to the hands remind the interpretation of hand movements of Etruscan small bronzes. Even the base, adorned with leaves and spirals, recalls ancient bronze supports.
