ARTWORK N° 32
Stavropulos Pietà
The artist worked on this Pietà right after the one in Santa Croce, once again renewing a topic that had also stimulated varied and original solutions, as proven by the preparatory models, thus creating a piece of art totally new for its monumentality and sacredness. In 1934, after his death, the bronze casting executed by Vignali assisted by his students Innocenti, Berti and Gelli, was presented at the Venice Biennial. Andreotti conceived and realized this ‘Pietà’ as an amiable revenge towards the ‘Monument to the Italian Mother’ which had raised lots of controversy during the inauguration.
